FUT Follicular Unit Transplant

Also known as strip method hair transplantation, it is the oldest hair restoration technique. The procedure involves excising a linear strip of hair bearing strip of skin from the back or either side of the scalp. The strip is further dissected under a powerful microscope to obtain grafts for transplantation.

FUE Follicular Unit Extraction

FUE is a relatively modern technique that does not involve cutting and stitching of scalp. It rather uses a pneumatic punch to extract every graft individually. The punch tool has a diameter less than 1mm and therefore it allows for creating highly natural looking hairline. Extracted grafts can be transplanted right away or collected in a saline solution.

Understanding Female Genital Plastic Surgery Procedures

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a procedure that can be done under either local anesthesia or, particularly if combined with another procedure, under general anesthesia. The goal of the procedure is to reduce the inner, non-hair-bearing lips of the female genitalia so that they don’t hang below the hair-bearing labia majora. Women opt for surgery for a variety of reasons, including pain from twisting and tugging of the labia when riding a bike or during intercourse; itching and irritation; and self-consciousness.

The most common type of labiaplasty is the trim procedure, in which the extra tissue is removed and sewn up directly. Next in popularity is the wedge procedure, which maintains a natural border after a pie-shaped piece of tissue has been removed. Extra folds of the clitoral hood can also be reduced at the same time.

Recovery time is typically a week, with resumption of wearing tampons or having intercourse after four to six weeks.

Labia Majoraplasty

A labia majoraplasty can be done when the hair-bearing labia majora are too large or hang down. In some cases, when there is atrophy of fatty tissue, a small amount of fat can be transferred from another area of the body after liposuction. This procedure can also be done under local general anesthesia, depending on the amount to be removed.

Vaginoplasty

After childbirth, women may complain of vaginal laxity, sometimes to the point that a tampon falls out, and this can contribute to sexual dysfunction. A vaginoplasty brings the separate muscles together, and extra skin is removed. While the procedure can be done under local anesthesia, many opt to have it done under general anesthesia.

Recovery from a vaginoplasty is one to two weeks, with no tampons or intercourse for eight weeks.

Monsplasty

Some women struggle with a bulge of excess skin and fat in the upper part of the hair-bearing part of their vulva. The bulge can result in women feeling too embarrassed to wear a bathing suit or tight pants. A monsplasty can reduce the extra tissue by removal of skin, direct removal of fat, and/or liposuction. Depending on the amount of tissue removed, this procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia. Recovery takes about a week, with physical activity restrictions for up to six weeks.

Outcomes

Patient satisfaction with female genital plastic surgery is very high. Labiaplasty, the most commonly performed procedure, has a satisfaction rate of 90% or greater.

Can Fat Return After Liposuction?

Liposuction produces near immediate results, instantly removing unwanted body fat in isolated areas of the body to create the ideal silhouette. Even the fittest of individuals often turn to liposuction to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat that are frequently unresponsive to diet and exercise.

Beyond the initial dramatic results, many patients considering liposuction have concerns over longevity. In fact, one of the most common questions our practice receives concerning liposuction is "can fat return after my treatment?"

Liposuction Permanently Removes Fat

While there are several different liposuction techniques commonly used today, all variations focus on a singular goal: removing fat cells from a targeted (localized) area of the body. All liposuction procedures use the combination of a cannula (hallow tube) and aspirator (suctioning device) to literally suction out stubborn fat.

It is important to note that liposuction does indeed permanently remove fat cells from the body.

Can Fat Return?

Unfortunately, it is possible for fat to return after liposuction... if you allow it to come back. In general, the more weight gained by a patient after liposuction, the less dramatic their results will be.

Fat will not return (and ideal results will remain intact) if the patient maintains their "post-lipo weight." For example, if a patient weighed 130 pounds prior liposuction and had a total of 6 pounds removed through the procedure, fat will stay away if the patient maintains their weight at or below 124 pounds.

If the patient gains a small amount of weight after their procedure, say 5 pounds, fat cells throughout the body will get a little bigger. While this slight weight gain can diminish results, the overall improved body shape provided by a liposuction procedure will still be visible as treated body areas have less fat cells (and thus experience a lower enlargement rate) compared to surrounding areas.

Finally, in cases of considerable weight gain (i.e. 10% of their body weight); new fat cells can develop in all areas of the body, including treated areas. However, since new fat cell creation typically occurs in an even manner throughout the body, fat often accumulates less in treated areas compared to untreated areas. Thus many liposuction patients who gain considerable post-procedure weight tend to still look better than if they did not undergo liposuction.

The First Few Hours to the First Day after Surgery

Follicular Unit Transplant, also known as strip method transplant, is the traditional hair restoration technique which involves cutting a hair bearing strip of skin from the baldness resistant areas of the scalp – the back or sides of the head. The strip is then dissected under a powerful microscope to obtain hair follicles of desired size. The grafts thus obtained are then transplanted on the bald or thinning areas of the scalp.

Are you a Candidate?

In general anyone who is bothered by baldness and wants to cover his thatch can benefit from Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), but there are certain limitations that are considered when determining candidacy of an individual.

Enough donor hair supply: hair transplant patient should have enough balding resistant donor hair supply that could be planted to the bald area
Sufficiently loose scalp skin: loose scalp skin is a must for strip removal method. Strip of donor tissue cannot be excised if scalp does not have sufficient laxity.

Preparing for FUT:

Preparing well for a surgery is the key to its success. Follow the tips below and get the most out of FUT hair transplant:

Stop taking aspirin and aspirin containing products at least two weeks before the surgery.
Quit smoking at least a couple of weeks prior to your FUT hair transplant.
Alcohol consumption should be stopped 5 to 7 days before your transplant is scheduled.
Fill all your prescriptions (both antibiotics and painkillers) well in advance.
Get your tests done and the reports submitted with the clinic well in time.

FUT Strip Method Procedure

Donor area preparation: The very first step is preparing the donor area, which involves shaving and marking the back or sides of scalp for strip cutting.
Administering anesthesia (donor site): Before cutting the strip donor area is made numb by administering local anesthesia.
Strip cutting: A linear strip of hair bearing superficial layer of skin is excised from the donor site – the back or side of the head.
Stitching the scalp: The surgeon will carefully stitch back the skin with stitches and staples.
Graft preparation: The strip contains thousands of hair follicles. It is excised under a powerful stereo microscope to obtain individual mini grafts for transplantation.
Administering anesthesia (recipient site): Local anesthesia is again administered to the recipient area to numb it.
Recipient area preparation: the surgeon makes tiny incisions at the recipient site at specific angles.
Graft insertion: the last step of FUT hair transplant is inserting grafts carefully into the tiny incisions made by the surgeon.

Recovery Process

Your scalp with be itchy and sore immediately after FUT hair transplant
Start taking the prescribed medicines immediately after the surgery
Use cold compressions to treat pain and swelling, but be very gentle
Do not expect your new hair grown the next week
The transplanted hair will initially shed and then start grow back (shock loss)
Transplanted hair follicles will remain inactive for around three months
You will start noticing your hair growing at least after 4 to 6 months
It may take more than a year before you will be able to see full results

Post-operative Care

Washing scalp: Do not wash your scalp for at least 24 to 36 hours following surgery.
Touching scalp: During the first few days be very careful about touching newly planted hair follicles.
Medications: Avoid taking blood thinners for 10 to 14 days following the surgery.
Smoking: Refrain from smoking for at least a couple of weeks.
Alcohol consumption: Avoid alcohol and alcohol containing drinks for 5 to 7 days at least.
Sun exposure: Avoid direct sunlight for at least a month.
Never pick at scab: Picking at scab or scratching your scalp is strictly prohibited for 15 to 20 days.
